iSpin Toolkit App requires iPhone or iPod Touch with OS 3.0 or later installed.
Download the iSpin Toolkit App (takes you to iTunes).
iSpin Toolkit was designed by Michael Golding, and experienced app designer with two previous knitting apps – iKnit Needle Sizer and Knit Gauge.
iSpin Toolkit is the first ever app for handspinners!
Overall Impressions:
I straightforward and easy to use app that will help my spinning stay consistent, and give me more options for understanding my singles and plied yarn than I will likely ever need.
I’m glad I purchased this app, and look forward to many hours of exploring all of its many features.
My favorite feature so far? The Wraps Per Inch tool. I’d been putting off getting on of those plastic WPI cards, because they are $15! Now I don’t have to.
If you’re a spinner and have an iPhone or iPod Touch, I’d seriously consider this app.
Features:
- Twist Angle Gauge
- Wraps Per Inch (WPI) Gauge
- Twists Per Inch (TPI) Gauge
- Reference guides explaining the features and when you would need to use them.
- Clear instructions on how to use each feature
- Project Estimator – estimates how much fiber you will need for a project, based on wraps per inch, yarn length, and number of plies (both metric and imperial)
- Wraps Per Inch to Grist – calculates approximate yards per pound, ounce, kilogram, and gram based on wraps per inch
- Grist Converter – converts number length per weight over a number of different length and weight measures.
- Niddy Noddy Calculator – input length of one full wrap around the niddy noddy and the total number of wraps and it will calculate the total length.
- Balanced Yarn Calculator – input number of plies and TPI in singles and it will calculate the twists per inch needed for a balanced yarn.
- Singles TPI from Desired Yarn TPI – input plies and balanced yarn TPI, and it calculates the TPI needed in your singles for a balanced yarn.
- Singles Wraps Per Inch – input number of plies and desired size of final yarn in wraps per inch and it calculates the wraps per inch your singles much be spun to achieve desired wraps per inch in plied yarn.
- Plied Wraps Per Inch – input plies and singles wraps per inch to find out the plied yarn WPI.
- Fiber Weight to Singles WPI for Length & Plies – input fiber weight, desired plied length and number of plies, and it will calculate the singles wraps per inch you will need to spin and the approximate final yarn wraps per inch
- Twists Per Inch from Wheel Configuration – input wheel ratio “1: _”, number times you will treadle, and draft zone (number of inches) and it will tell you your twists per inch
- Treadles for Twists Per Inch – input desired TPI, wheel ratio, and draft zone length, and it will calculate the number of times you will need to treadle per time you draft out more fiber
- TPI for Firmness – both the Mabel Ross way and the Alden Amos way - used to determine twist per inch in the final yarn, based on the firmness of the final yarn you are trying to achieve and the number of wraps per inch
Pros:
- Features for pretty much everything you could ever want or need in a spinning app.
- Straightforward and easy to use.
- Lots of reference information to explain each feature.
- Lots of options within each feature. Eg, ability to change screen color in features that require you to lay yarn across the screen, so you can actually see what you’re doing.
- Designer factored in measuring both “Z” twist and “S” twist.
- There is a “show instructions” button on each feature page, so you never feel lost and you know how to use each feature.
- 13 different calculators (see above for descriptions).
- Screens to measure both twist angle and number of twists per inch.
- Reference section that explains things like twist angle, shows a chart on wraps per inch, and the corresponding yarn weight from specific wraps per inch.
- Wraps per inch gauge – allows you to hold your single, or plied yarn over the specifically spaced areas on the screen to determine the number of wraps per inch.
- There is soon to be a youtube video demo of this app, created by the app designer.
Cons:
- The Price. At $4.99 this app is fairly expensive and is likely to scare a lot of people off. However, those who do purchase this app will quickly realize that it is worth every penny and more.
